Brazil, as the world's fifth-largest country by land area, has a population of 210 million, with agriculture and livestock being the pillar industries. Brazil boasts the world's largest plain—the Amazon Plain—with arable land exceeding 2.7 billion mu, 83.4 million hectares of cultivated land in 2020, and 172.3 million hectares of pasture. Agricultural output accounts for 21% of Brazil's GDP, providing over 10% of employment opportunities nationwide. Brazilian agriculture is mainly distributed in the flat, humid, and warm coastal regions of the east and southeast, with tropical cash crops as the main produce. Brazil leads the world in the production of coffee, sugar, citrus, and green beans, being the second-largest grower of genetically modified crops globally, the largest soybean producer, and the third-largest corn producer. Agriculture is seen as an important driver of Brazil's national economy.
Brazil is one of the world's largest grain producers and exporters, but its soil is poor and acidic, making the use of fertilizers crucial for increasing yield. Brazil's fertilizer consumption accounts for approximately 66.0% of South America's total, and due to stable grain prices, improved infrastructure, and suitable growth conditions (climate and soil), Brazil's planting area and fertilizer usage have been increasing. Brazilian fertilizer consumption is mainly concentrated on four major crops: soybeans, corn, sugarcane, and coffee. In 2021, Brazil's fertilizer consumption is expected to surpass 40 million tons for the first time. It is projected that between 2021 and 2026, the annual compound growth rate of the Brazilian fertilizer market will remain around 4.4%. The Brazilian fertilizer market (NPK) is highly concentrated, with four companies holding 80% of the market share. Brazil imports 75% of its fertilizer consumption, ranking fourth after China, India, and the United States.
In Brazil's agricultural inputs distribution system, distributors account for 42%, direct sales 32%, and cooperatives 25%. The top ten distributors in Brazil account for nearly 1 billion USD, while the top ten cooperatives account for 1.6 billion USD. Distribution channels in Brazil play a very important role in entering the market. For agrochemical companies, building sales channels is a crucial step for products to reach growers.
